Who: ACME members
What: A V.I.L.E. case with Sir Vile and Eddie Mology

Sir Vile held the strip of paper close to his facemask, peering at it through the slats.

Make haste to the place where Jim Crow died.
Sneak past the sentries filled with beef.
Steal the small house in which reside
The second sun of Africa and the heir to the throne of the Black King.

Setting the clue down, he bent over the encyclopedia he had been using to solve it and squinted. The tiny printed words gave him a headache. Deciding on a solution he picked up the small math box--what was it called?--and tried to calculate the distance to his destination, as one of the other V.I.L.E. members had shown him how to do. His gauntleted finger couldn't press fewer than four buttons at a time. Blast these modern technologies! What was ever wrong with storytelling and the abacus?

Glancing up he saw some ACME members enter the library. They hadn't seen him yet, but he was wearing a suit of armor, so he decided that it was time to leave. He walked nonchalantly towards the rear door at first, but had to hasten his step after knocking over a children's book display.

Exiting the building he realized that he had left Carmen's clue on the desk. Too late now--he would just have to hurry to the destination.

(Where is Sir Vile going and what is he planning to steal? Role-playing.)

*Bites his pipe* Hmm, any free detectives wish to take this up? This may be quite the caper.

[OOC: Thanks for the heads up, Chief!]

Nevon was asked to answer a call about a suspicious suit of arms in a library.  He wasn't expecting much this week because a semester was ending at ACME Academy and most of the students are already planning to go home.  Nev was busy thinking about what they were going to do at the seriously wild campus party next Saturday.

Not spotting anyone strange surveying the room of books, he did hear a noise, like a tin can, and would have followed it if something else didn't catch his attention.

Make haste to the place where Jim Crow died.
Sneak past the sentries filled with beef.
Steal the small house in which reside
The second sun of Africa and the heir to the throne of the Black King.

This sounded like a clue, but Nevon was no expert. So he put the paper in an evidence bag. "Uhm... Chief?" he said into his handheld, "I think I got something."

Brian was called upon by the Chief to accompany Nevon as a field agent in training, and to assist as best he could.  He entered the library, walked over to Nevon, and looked at the clue intently.   "Hmm, very interesting." he said thoughtfully, "I can tell that the 'heir to the throne of the Black King' appears to be pointing to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the Jim Crow being referred to has to do with the Jim Crow laws, and both appear to go hand in hand, but I can't figure out how the 'second sun of Africa' and the 'sentries filled with beef' fit in." Brian sat down at a nearby table and continued to think over the puzzling clue.

Nevon was puzzled too, but he's happy at least Chief sent additional help.

"Good link between Jim Crow and Dr. King, E, but I don't think Black King is actually a person, if the clue said 'Steal the small house that which reside'.  Stealing tombs or homes is a little low.  I'm thinking they're some kind of valuable objects?" Nev sat down opposite of E Lou Sive, his new case buddy, "Africa is known for gems, is there one called 'Second Sun' or nicknamed 'Second Sun of Africa'?"

[It's taking a while to solve, but we're getting there! Thanks for joining, E Lou Sive!]

[No problem NevonSmile This looked like fun from the outset, but I had to wait a while for the Chief to approve me as a member of ACME.]

Brian Googled the things Nevon suggested on a computer at the table.

"The Second Sun and Black Prince (heir to the throne of the Black King) are both names of gems among the Crown Jewels of England, which have been kept at the Tower of London for almost 700 years.  The sentries that stand guard there are nicknamed 'Beefeaters,'  and get this!  The oldest raven to live there was named Jim Crow!  But what is the 'small house' wherein the jewels reside?  Is it the Crown itself?"

"Nice googling!" Nevon exclaimed, "I don't know what VILE would want, but let's check it out.  I'll let you do the honors of asking Chief for the C-5 to the Tower of London, I'm going to see if any other detectives want to join up and meet you there in 5."

"Will do!" said Brian, ready for action, "See you across the pond!  Cheerio!"

Brian called the Chief on his handheld: "Chief, C-5 me to the Tower of London!"

Eddie, disguised as a young Indian man, made haste as he climbed up Tower Hill. Timing was vital for the success of their plan, and he didn’t want to be late.

He had just made it to the courtyard as he heard the alarms go off inside the Waterloo barracks. Dat was Heer Vile, he thought. According to the plan, the knight had just rushed into the jewel chambers and dropped a smoke bomb containing a mild hallucinogen. Now the cameras could no longer see the hulking figure and the police wouldn’t believe tales about a knight in shining armour from the dazed witnesses. And yet, at that very moment, a massive armoured fist smashed though the security glass and extracted the Imperial State ground.

Goed.

Eddie had just reached the entrance to the White Tower and could no longer see how Sir Vile suddenly crashed through the window and let himself fall, but he did hear the gigantic thud of the armour absorbing the blow as it reverberated inside the courtyard.

Eddie had barely had time to get into position when he saw Sir Vile enter through the same door he’d taken into the Armoury in White Tower and suddenly… stop and stand as still as a statue in front of the wall, unseen by the visitors who hadn’t heard the commotion through the thick stone walls and were still engrossed in their sightseeing.

Brave jongen. He’d followed the plan perfectly.

It was Eddie’s turn now, as he made his way to Sir Vile and rasped the accorded signal on his breastplate. Gently, Sir Vile loosened his gauntlet, giving Eddie access to the crown, which he replaced with two train tickets and an inconspicuous slip of paper.

He now had only a few seconds to leave the place before the theft was confirmed and the area cordoned off. Despite this, he couldn’t resist one last glance at the unmoving Sir Vile, now being admired by two small children.

Sir Vile would exit later, under the cover of the night, but Eddie was already blending in with the crowd in the underground, who would never have dreamed he was carrying their country’s most precious possession in a bag from Tesco’s.

His disguise was perfect. In a city where 7% of the population was of Indian ethnicity, who would suspect him? In an armoury, who would suspect a suit of armour?

[Seeing how long it has taken ACME to solve the clue, surely, we have at least a day or two of head start, right? Sir Vile should be gone by the time the agents land.]

By dusk a crowd of eight children surrounded Sir Vile, laughing and rubbing his armor with some sort of brightly-colored sticks. He just didn't understand the children of the future. So loud, and...happy. What good were they if they weren't out working the fields? They could all use a good epidemic to ground them a bit, he thought.

Losing his patience when one of the girls began stuffing grass into his armor's crevices, he bent over to shoo them away, flicking his metal wrists in an outward motion. This created a brief pause of complete silence. Then several of them began to scream in high-pitched tones and run around, drawing the attention of nearby adults. Hrmm...not good.

Panting through a clamorous exit, Sir Vile examined the clue that the mysterious Indian man had placed in his gauntlet:

Where an ofen and furnace formed one city
Your next target is in Parliament
Higher than highnesses, an authority
So mighty that, although cross-bent,
Sat near to Arthur in the king's Last Sleep.

Out of the need to hold it close to his facemask and run simultaneously, he ended up stumbling dramatically. Standing again, he caught glimpse of the slip of paper whisping back towards the Tower in the evening breeze. No matter--he knew this one.

[OOC:  Nice job on the cut scenes, you two!  I'll RP my arrival.]

After having to brush the leaves off that had gotten tangled in his things because the C-5 dumped him in a tree, Brian started walking toward the Tower.  All of a sudden, a piece of paper blew past him and he was able to chase it down.

Where an ofen and furnace formed one city

Higher than highnesses, an authority
So mighty that, although cross-bent,
Sat near to Arthur in the king's Last Sleep

Brian furrowed his brow in concentration, hoping other agents would arrive soon to help.

[Had permission from Nina to write this.]

Nevon arrived at the Tower wearing a wet pair of sneakers.  He was contacting a few other agents, one of them was Nina West, who was snorkeling at the Seychelles. She told him she was on her way, while splashing water on his shoes in the process.

"Is that a clue?" Nevon asked E, seeing him with a piece of paper and furrowed brows. Skimming the clue, Nev can only think of Avalon, but Carmen's not that obvious. And what's an 'Ofen'?

"Let's go think about this over some tea," the gumshoe suggested to his friend, "Maybe we'll think better once we get some caffiene."

[[ Ooc: Fine Nev, I'm joining, but that's because you asked. Cutting it shorter, let's assume Nina's just C-5ed here. ]]  :)

Nina joined the team, introduced herself, and started following the boys to the first tea shop they could find. She'd remember the name if she wasn't only thinking about the clue.

"Think 'ofen' is German for the 'Buda' part of Budapest..." she recited because she almost flunked that section of German-Slavic history last semester, "Cuz 'Pest' comes from the Slavic word 'Pec', for 'stove', furnance--stove, get it? The Hungarian Parliament Building is there too. That's half the clue."

She put the paper down and looked through the tea menu. "Establishment, man, I miss the beach and my pineapple punch already."

(OOC: Glad you two could make it!  Let's catch Sir Vile and Eddie Mology!!)

"Good work guys!" Brian exclaimed, "And I solved the other half of the clue!  The Crown of Hungary is in the Hungarian Parliament Building, and on it is an image of Jesus Christ, the mighty cross-bent authority, whose followers had a major influence on the tales of King Arthur.  Who wants to C-5 to Budapest!?!" Brian said, eager for action.

(Correct object and location. The Holy Crown of Hungary is itself the highest authority in Hungary: the King is chosen for it, not the other way around. The cross at its apex is famously bent, and it was depicted in Edward Burne-Jones' masterpiece The Last Sleep of Arthur in Avalon. Here's a zoom-in of the section that has it--it's on the ground. http://cgfa.dotsrc.org/burne/p-burne18.htm)

The clink of Sir Vile's spurs echoed throughout the vast central hall of Hungary's Parliament. Approaching a chair he dropped into it heavily and let the two train ticket stubs in his hand--the EuroStar to Paris and the Intercity to Budapest--flutter to the ground. Looking down at the table before him, he saw several of the flexible, picture-filled variety of books he had so often seen the giddy blonde-haired person at VILE headquarters reading. He selected one with a picture of a woman wearing a red dress on the cover and pretended to read it, or whatever you were supposed to do with them, while scanning the area for his partner.

To be honest he wasn't too clear on the plan. Carmen had explained it to him, but his rocky language skills made it hard enough even when he wasn't listening to somebody so...refined. He did remember there was supposed to be a guard carrying a...oh, there. But he didn't look Indian. Was this a different man?

Eddie, carrying a garbage bag, walked into the grand room that had Hungary's crown jewels on display. Seeking out one of the real guards he made small talk in Hungarian for five minutes or so, just to develop rapport. In due time the man continued his patrol, leaving Eddie alone in the room. Taking a hammer from his garbage bag, he leaned against the crown display and let a minute pass on his watch before smashing the glass and dropping to the ground.

His guard pal and several others responded within seconds. Holding his ankle and wincing in pain, Eddie pointed to the exit and exclaimed, "
Én kapott a korona de Én megrándult az én -m boka! Ő ment abba az irányba!" (I got the crown but I sprained my ankle! He went that way!) Once one of the guards checked that the crown was safe, they all ran out the exit. Eddie stood, put the crown in the garbage bag with his hammer and walked out the entrance. Making his way to the central hall he removed one of the full garbage bags in a wastebasket there and replaced it with the one holding his prize. Swinging the trash over his shoulder he exited.

With an effort Sir Vile stood and took the apparently empty garbage bag from its container. He left Parliament with it. Guests and employees watched him quizically, but he was wearing a suit of armor. You just don't bother people like that.

Nev landed in Buddapest, missing grass and hitting pavement.  He could tell this day was going to be just great.  There was some commotion going on, and guards running out of an exit pointed in his direction.

Holy cow, he thought.  A few other things ran past his head but he reacted mostly like a deer staring at headlights.  Should he show them his badge, should he run, should he duck, what??

Disposed from the C-5, Nina almost landed in the grass, but hopped on the pavement. She was a plant person and even though she didn't take walking on grass or picking flowers seriously, she consciously avoided unnecessary abrasions on the greens.

Not that it made any difference, the people running towards Nevon looked ready to mash up that lawn with their faux

"We're ACME!" Nina stepped in and showed her badge. "uhh... Van-e bűncselekmény? (Is there a crime?)" She decided to go with whatever little Hungarian she knew.

The guards stopped to explain that an unidentified thief had attempted to steal an object, crown or something (Nina's understanding of Hungarian or Hungarian-accented English was limited), from the display. When Nina asked who they were specifically looking for, the guards reminded her that the person was "unidentified" and was last seen running this way.

Confused, Nina asked to see a surveillance tape and reluctantly, the ACME detectives were led inside.  Immediately obvious was the fact that the crown was gone.

"Great," Nina sighed, agitated at how this crime could have been prevented. "I'm going to go check the tape, you boys do perimeter and let's find some eye-witnesses?"

Istvan, head of Parliament security, pressed the rewind button on the machine below monitor four. While the tape inside whirred he smirked at the image upon monitor one: the two American agents were gesticulating impatiently to his men, who were blocking the exit from the crown jewel room. Hah, Istvan thought, let them wait. Serves them right for coming in here, ordering my guards around as if I couldn't handle this myself. He stopped the tape and pressed play, then on second thought stopped it again and rose to get some coffee. Finding the sugar bowl empty, he stomped into an adjacent room and ordered an employee to retrieve a new bowl from the break room, then grudgingly returned to his seat and started the machine.

This tape showed the central hall, where the employee at the front desk had called in suspicious activity. Sure enough, there was a knight reading a magazine--some loon, no doubt--but no thief. Then entered one of his guards with an empty trash bag--picking up the slack from the janitorial team, he'd have to be commended--which he used to replace a trash bin. The knight stood up and took the bag--wait a second. Istvan rewound the tape to just before the knight stood. Yes, he had definitely hidden something there. What was it, a slip of paper? A note? Probably nothing. He'd have one of the guards put it on his desk.

Stepping back into the crown jewel room he ordered a guard in rapid Hungarian, jerking his thumb towards the central hall. Approaching the two ACME agents he smiled politely and spoke in accented English: "I'm so sorry but we have a technical difficulty and the tapes cannot be played. But we now have a suspect, and so your services are no longer required. My men will escort you out." With a gesture to the four guards, Istvan exited.
