Time for my first fanfic of the new year!

Today's singers:
Rockapella (classic)
Duelapella

[Pre-show segment; in the alley, Rebecca holds her teddy bear while watching a YouTube video of a classic episode of The Price is Right (from 1988) on her new iPad 2]

Rebecca: You think that spa was valued at more than $1,000 back in the late '80s, Teddy?

[She holds her bear up to her ear]

Rebecca: Really? I think so, too.

[Sean enters]

Sean: Hey, Beck.

Rebecca: Hi, Sean.

Sean: Nice iPad.

Rebecca: Thanks, Sean. Yugi and Tea got it for me for Christmas. 16 gigs.

Sean: Had a good New Year's weekend?

Rebecca: Oh, did I? Friday night, my Grandpa came to visit. Just for a few hours, though, to see how I'm doing, now that Yugi and Tea are my legal guardians. Saturday night, we had a big New Year's Eve party. As soon as the ball dropped, there were hugs and kisses galore. And yesterday morning, Yugi and I went to IHOP for breakfast while Tea looked after Cody. And that night, we all went to see the new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie. I don't care what critics may say. It's a hit. Even though my favorite movie of 2011 is the remake of Footloose.

Sean: Uh-huh.

Rebecca: How 'bout you, Sean? What'd you do in your time off?

Sean: Just watched the ball drop with my family on New Year's Eve.

Rebecca: Oh.

[The rest of Rockapella and the rest of Duelapella (Tea holds Cody in her child carrier) enters]

Rebecca: There you guys are.

Yugi: Quite the early bird, aren't you, Rebecca?

Rebecca: Hey, I have a fast bike. I owe it to Mai for getting it for me for Christmas.

Tea: You guys aren't gonna believe what Alvin told me when he called me this morning. During the weekend, he, his brothers, the Chipettes, and Digipella were trying to crack a murder case, which also turned out to be an insurance scam. The murderer killed his brother-in-law so he could get over half a million bucks on insurance. The guy's accomplice also tampered with some evidence.

Joey: Both were arrested Friday night, so the deceased's son gets all the insurance money.

Mai: The accomplice is doing 11-15 in prison, and he's lost his license. Plus, the murderer lost 50 grand for stealing and damaging the car he stole, and he's stuck in prison for the rest of his life.

Tristan: And he's not entitled to parole, or even a phone call.

Duke: Good riddance. He was one H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks of a criminal.

Serenity: By the way, did you guys get word from Greg about his promotion to captain of ACME?

Scott: He Facebooked it, Serenity. He also Tweeted it. Every singer in ACME has heard of Greg's promotion.

Rebecca: But is the Chief still the Chief?

Barry: Oh, yeah. She's just at a higher rank. The highest, in fact.

Elliott: [looks at his watch] Okay, you guys. Let's save the talk for later. We've got a show to start!

[Everyone takes their places]

[Showtime!]

Chief: All these people want to know...!

Rockapella and Duelapella: Where in the World is... Carmen Sandiego?

[They do their intro; now, to the Gumshoes]

Chief: And one of these Gumshoes could find her!

Barry: She's traveled to Greece and likes playing saxophone. From New Orleans, Louisiana, meet Nita Persons!

Duke: He likes collecting old California Lottery tickets in his spare time, and has recently reunited with his soldier father after a year in Iraq. From Los Angeles, California, meet Rolly Winston!

Jeff: He's always wanted to windsurf, and he's into playing drums. From New York City, meet Bud Rossi!

[Now, to the alley; Greg enters and greets the singers]

Chief: And here's our captain in charge of training new recruits, Greg Lee!

[Greg enters HQ; cheers and applause]

Greg: Thank you all so very much! My first show as captain! And happy 2012!

[He greets the Gumshoes]

Greg: Hi, Gumshoes. 3 new recruits today. First Gumshoes of 2012. Good luck to you all. Ladies and gentlemen, as you see on my new badge, and from what the Chief just said during my introduction, just a few days ago, the Chief promoted me from senior agent to captain. Isn't that wonderful?!

[Cheers and applause]

Greg: Now, say hi to my buddies, as always.

Rockapella: Rockapella!

Duelapella: Duelapella!

Tea: And Cody.

Rebecca: Teddy, too.

[Applause]

Greg: Gumshoes, I'd like to remind you that the one of you that captures Carmen Sandiego today is gonna win our jackpot of $10,000 and a trip to anywhere in North America, and that is a heck of a deal, ladies and gentlemen!

[Applause]

Greg: All right, then. Now, even though I'm captain, I'm stickin' with my favorite boss. Chief?

[The Chief appears on the monitor]

Chief: Thank you, Greg. By the way, excellent work on the Central Park case, the forest case, and the Whittle case. You and your detectives.

Greg: Thanks. It's just too bad you weren't there.

Chief: That's all right. Someone had to be in charge in my absence over the past week.

Greg: Anyway, Chief, who we after today?

Chief: Gumshoes, this is Double Trouble.

Rockapella: [scat] Double Trouble (Trouble)! [scat] Double Trouble (Trouble)!

Chief: They match,
they snatch,
and they're hard to catch.
Their last-known whereabouts: San Francisco, California.

Located in Chinatown is a one-way alleyway known as the Jack Kerouac Alley.

Chief: The alley is named after Jack Kerouac, a Beat Generation writer who used to frequent the pub and bookstore adjacent to the alley. The alley is now known for its engraved Western and Chinese poems, including poets such as John Steinbeck and Maya Angelou. Or it was, until today!

Duelapella: Crime!

Chief: Double Trouble snuck into the City by the Bay, charged into Chinatown, and away the alley went! They plan on putting our very own alley to shame by using the stolen alley as a hangout for V.I.L.E. Gumshoes, you've got to save our organization's reputation and crack today's caper...!

Rockapella: Whoo-WHOO!!

Chief: Alley-Oops!

[Applause]

[Back to HQ]

Greg: I thank you, Chief. Okay, Gumshoes. We're gonna start each of you off with 100 ACME Crime Bucks. Each time you answer a question correctly, we'll add 20 more Crime Bucks to your score. If all 3 of you answer the same question correctly, we'll give each of you an additional 20 Crime Bucks. And the two of you Gumshoes that end the round with the highest scores will then advance to the next round to try and catch Double Trouble. Now, before we go too far into this, let's find out more about you three newbies. First off, Nita, all the way from the Big Easy, tell us about yourself.

Nita: I'm into playing saxophone.

Greg: Now, ladies and gentlemen, I wanna show you a video of her playing the sax at her Christmas concert. Watch this.

[A 15-second video of Nita playing "Christmastime is Here (Charlie Brown Christmas)" on her saxophone at her school auditorium]

[Back to HQ]

[Applause]

Greg: That's a wonderful tune, Nita. Nice job.

[He and Nita shake hands]

Greg: Really nice. Next, we have Rolly. Rolly, it says here that your dad came home on Christmas morning?

Rolly: Yeah. It was one heck of a surprise. He came in dressed as Santa, bearing gifts for me and my sister. When Mom asked me to look into his eyes, I recognized him, and he removed the beard and hat.

Greg: Must've been your best Christmas ever.

Rolly: It sure was.

Greg: Thanks for sharing that wonderful moment, Rolly. By the way, is that your dad in the audience, waving at the camera?

[Rolly's father in the audience waves to the camera]

Rolly: Yes, it is.

Greg: Give his father a hand!

[Applause]

Greg: Finally, we have Bud, a drummer in school, it says here.

Bud: It's true. I've been drumming for 3 years.

Greg: Did you ever play in any concerts?

Bud: My first concert was a recent Christmas concert. Did every song in the program.

Greg: Whoa. Big gig.

Bud: I know.

Greg: Anyway, it's good to have you all on the case today. Let's get this started with our first clue of the day. Chief?

[Back to the Chief]

Chief: Here's what we know so far, Gumshoes. ACME Alley Net has tracked the twins to a place called a steeg. That's a Dutch term for alley. The city they're in has many stegen running between the major streets, roughly parallel to each other, but not at right angles to the streets. The city's origin is a dam in the river Amstel, and they were last seen crossing a bridge over the Leidsegracht. Greg?

[Back to HQ]

Greg: Thanks, Chief. Okay, guys. Name the European city. Is it Amsterdam, Copenhagen, or Berlin? Remember the clues that we heard: Stegen, Amstel River, and Leidsegracht. Lock in your answers as quickly as you can, please.

[The Gumshoes lock in their answers]

Greg: All 3 are locked in. We'll start with you, Nita. What'd you say?

Nita: Amsterdam.

Greg: Amsterdam. Rolly?

Rolly: Amsterdam.

Greg: Amsterdam. Bud?

Bud: Amsterdam.

Greg: Everybody says Amsterdam, everybody's right! Nice job, Gumshoes! Good way to kick off the first show of 2012!

[Applause]

Greg: Everyone goes up to 140 Crime Bucks, and, as always, all of our answers have been verified by National Geographic World.

Rockapella: National Geographic World!

Greg: Thank you very much. Now--

[KNOCK ON DOOR!]

Greg: Come in!

[Joey, the Dying Informant, groans in pain as he weakly limps inside and hits the ground]

Greg: What on Earth, man?

Joey: EEEEEEEEEE! I saw 'em! The party boys with the stolen alley! They're in... a country in West... Africa!

[He faints]

Greg: Joey, we need a little more info. Just what you gave us isn't gonna help.

Joey: WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I saw 'em... flashin... franc... in... LOME!!

[He faints again]

Greg: Coffee!

[A stagehand gives him a half-full mug of coffee]

Greg: Thanks.

[He spills the coffee on Joey, waking him up]

Joey: YEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!! That's hot! Its culture reflects the influences of its 37 tribal ethnic groups, the largest and most influential of which are the Ewe, Mina, and Kabre! OH, MAMA!

[He faints]

Greg: Oh, boy.

[Serenity enters and drags Joey back into the alley]

Greg: Thanks, Serenity. Okay, guys. You heard him. Name the country. Is it Burkina Faso, Benin, or Togo? Remember the clues that we heard: West Africa, Lome, franc, and Ewe, Mina, and Kabre ethnic groups.

[The Gumshoes lock in their answers]

Greg: Nita, what'd you say?

Nita: Togo.

Greg: Togo. Rolly?

Rolly: Benin.

Greg: Benin. Bud?

Bud: Togo.

Greg: Togo. The answer we're looking for is Togo! Nice job, Nita and Bud!

[Applause]

Greg: That takes Nita and Bud to 160 apiece, and Rolly stays at 140. Now, for our next clue, here... he is!

[A fanfare is heard; the A symbol appears]

Greg: ACME MAN!

Rockapella: Look out! Look out!
ACME Man!
ACME Man!
If he can do it,
maybe anyone can!

[Now, to Charlie's house; Charlie puts his stained shirt from an earlier show, along with his other laundry, in the washing machine; he is about to add what seems to be detergent to the machine, when you-know-who storms in]

ACME Man: Not so fast, my friend! The detergent in that bottle is not what you think it may be. Allow me, ACME Man, to fix that, whilst I give a clue to my friends at ACME.

[He cracks his knuckles, and Charlie hands him the detergent bottle]

ACME Man: [shoots lightning bolts at the bottle] If you're lookin' for Double Trouble, try and search L-Town, the capital of Michigan. It's the only state capital that's not also a county seat. They were last spotted in Potter Park Zoo with the stolen alley.

[He is finished; he takes a whiff of the detergent]

ACME Man: Ahh! Perfect!

[He hands the bottle back to Charlie]

ACME Man: There you are, my friend. You won't ever know how close you came to adding bleach to your dark clothes instead of detergent. Are you not impressed? Of course you are! Am I not the greatest superhero of all-time? Of course I am! For I am ACME Man! And I am going away!

[He flies away]

Rockapella: ACME MAN!!!

[Back to HQ]

Greg: ACME Man!

[Applause]

Greg: Okay, guys. Name the city. Is it Lansing, Madison, or Detroit?

[The Gumshoes quickly lock in their answers]

Greg: What'd you say, Nita?

Nita: Lansing.

Greg: Lansing. Rolly?

Rolly: Lansing.

Greg: Lansing. Bud?

Bud: I went with Detroit.

Greg: Detroit. The answer we're looking for is Lansing! Nice job, Nita and Rolly!

[Applause]

Greg: Nita goes to 180, Rolly to 160, and Bud stays at 160.

[Lightning flashes]

Greg: Okay. That special effect means that it's time for the Lightning Round. Here, we'll give you guys a chance to add some more Crime Bucks to your score. I have 4 questions here, all relating to Double Trouble's most recent-known whereabouts, which is Lansing, Michigan. Each correct answer is worth 10 Crime Bucks. Answer all 4 questions correctly, and you'll win our Lightning Lot. Today, we have 4 prizes. Let's see what we have today.

Sean: First off, we have a F-13 mini speed boat from St. Martin Power Boats. This 13-foot 4-inch craft features a 30-horsepower motor, electric start, power tilt, and is perfect for an adventrous day out on the river, lake, or ocean, from St. Martin Power Boats. $8,995.

[Applause]

[Applause]

Greg: Over 18 grand today. Okay, Gumshoes. Hands on the buttons. Here's the first question: A visual question. Take a look.

Greg: As you can see, the Lansing River Trail and Ottawa Street Power Station are visible behind the North Lansing dam of what river? Grand River, White River, or Mississ--

[Rolly rings in]

Greg: Rolly.

Rolly: Grand River.

[Bells sound out]

[Applause]

Greg: That's correct for 10. Nice job. Question 2: Another visual question.

Greg: This building is the tallest in Lansing. Name it.

[Bud rings in]

Greg: Bud.

Bud: Boji Tower.

[Bells sound out]

[Applause]

Greg: Boji Tower is right! 10 for you, Bud. Question 3: A human rights activist known--

[Bud rings in again]

Greg: Bud.

Bud: Malcolm X.

[Bells sound out]

[Applause]

Greg: Absolutely. And we can't forget Martin Luther King Day comin' later this month. Good job, Bud. Last question: This NBA basketball star is said to have grown up in Lansing. He played point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers until his retirement in 1996.

[Nita rings in]

Greg: Nita.

Nita: Johnson?

Greg: More specific?

Nita: Magic Johnson?

[Bells sound out]

Greg: Sure. Earvin "Magic" Johnson. Good job, Nita. That takes you to 190, Rolly has 170, and Bud has 180.

Chief: Greg, my office! Right away! I found something.

Greg: I'll be right over, Chief. Guys, I'll be back in a moment. The Chief's got somethin' to show me.

[He enters the Chief's office, where the Chief looks at a special device]

Greg: Hi, Chief. Hey! You found my Shrink-By-1% device! I've been lookin' all over for that! See, whatever you choose gets shrunk down by only 1%.

Chief: But, Greg, that's absurd.

Greg: Don't judge what you haven't seen yet. I'll show you. Lemme just set the machine to Greg and the Chief. Simply input the code.

[He types the code on the device]

Greg: And with the push of the blue button...

[He pushes the blue button, and the light on the device flashes for 3 seconds]

Chief: Nothing happened.

Greg: That's where you're wrong, Chief. See, you and I have now been shrunk down by 1%.

Chief: Greg, that's totally ridiculous! Oh, wait.

[She sees that her watch is on the bottom of her hand]

Chief: What's with my watch?

Greg: See, your wrist just got a percent smaller. And have a look at this.

[He takes off his left sneaker and exposes it to the Chief]

Greg: See how big this sneaker is?! Why? 'Cause my feet are now 1% smaller than it used to be.

Chief: Greg, this is no good. We can't spend the rest of our lives shrunk down by 1%! Can't you do something!?

Greg: Of course. See?

[He types another code on the device]

Greg: I set it to shrink everything in the universe except the 2 of us. Now to push the button again.

[He pushes the button again, and the light flashes again]

Chief: Did it work?

Greg: Yes, ma'am. Now it's all fixed. Everything in the universe is 1% smaller than before.

Chief: Well, that's a relief. Now, let's tell the home viewers about the contest. [to the camera] Folks at home, each time you watch the show, write down what got stolen and from where. When you've collected 5 Loots and locations, put them on a postcard, along with your name and address, and send it to...

Chief: ACME Crime Net
P.O. Box 4300
New York, NY 10163.

Or enter at PBS.org.

Greg: Each day, we'll select 5 people whose lists are correct and send them each a Carmen T-shirt, as well as enter them in our Weekly Home Viewer Sweepstakes. Here's who won today.

WINNERS

Farrah Wilkinson
San Diego, CA

Joanie Richter
Los Gatos, CA

Mark Winsor
Manhattan, NY

Ron Spivack
Buffalo, NY

Larry Gastineau
El Paso, TX

Greg: Congratulations to the winners!

Chief: Now, Greg, since that's outta the way, are there any other machines I should know about?

Greg: As a matter of fact, yes, Chief. There was one I was messin' around with prior to the show. That device enlarges things 1,000 times, so I enlarged everyone and everything in the universe! Everything...!

[He extracts a small car from his pocket]

Greg: [unhappily] Except your car, due to a minor temporary malfunction.

[The Chief is shocked]

[Greg pushes the horn in the car]

[BEEP! BEEP!]

Greg: And for that, I am truly sorry.

[He hands the Chief her shrunken car and walks out of the office with his sneaker]

[The Chief looks at her car in disappointment]

Chief: My lunch was in there. Oh, well.

[Greg comes out of the office]

Greg: All right, Gumshoes. Remember, we still have to find Double Trouble and the Jack Kerouac Alley. Now, ACME Bug Net has provided us with a recording of a phone conversation between the twins and Carmen Sandiego. Watch.

Carmen: Boys, they're hot on your trail. Take the alley to a public space and tourist attraction in central London.

Double Trouble: You want us to hide in Nelson's Column? That's in the center of the area.

Carmen: Certainly. But don't let any constables come near you. If you see any approaching the column, head east for the South Africa House, location of the High Commission of South Africa.

Double Trouble: On it, boss-lady!

[Back to HQ]

Greg: Okay, Gumshoes. I can also tell you that this place is managed by the Greater London Authority. With that, name the landmark. Is it Parliament Square, Piccadilly Circus, or Trafalgar Square? Remember the other clues that we heard: Public space, Nelson's Column, and South Africa House.

[The Gumshoes lock in their answers]

Greg: What'd you say, Nita?

Nita: I chose Trafalgar Square.

Greg: Trafalgar Square. Rolly?

Rolly: Trafalgar.

Greg: Trafalgar Square. Bud?

Bud: Trafalgar Square.

Greg: Everyone says Trafalgar Square, everyone's right! Nice job, guys!

[Applause]

Greg: Nita goes to 230, Rolly to 210, and Bud to 220. Now, we've just received word that Double Trouble have left London, so let's pick up... the Chase!

[Serenity runs past, dragging Joey, still in costume]

Rockapella and Duelapella: Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh... THE CHASE!!!

Greg: All these are worth 10 Crime Bucks. Our Chase Pot is at $500 today. Hands on your signaling buttons. Here we go. Double Trouble hightailed it to where the RMS Titanic was constructed.

[Nita rings in]

Greg: Nita.

Nita: Belfast.

Greg: Right. They then sailed back to the U.K. and scooted to Scotland's largest--

[Bud rings in]

Greg: Bud.

Bud: Glasgow.

Greg: Right. They sailed due northeast to Oslo. Name the sea.

[Rolly rings in]

Greg: Rolly.

Rolly: North Sea.

Greg: Right. They snuck into Stockho--

[Bud rings in again]

Greg: Bud.

Bud: Sweden.

Greg: Right. Finally, they sailed their way to Krakow.

[Bud rings in again]

Greg: Bud.

Bud: Poland.

Greg: Right. At the end of the Chase, Nita has 240, Rolly has 220, and Bud has 250. Now, this is the final clue of this round, which means you each get to decide how much you're willing to risk. If you're right, we'll add that amount to your score. But if you're wrong, we'll deduct it from your score. You can risk 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, or 100 ACME Crime Bucks. Take a look over here.

[A map of the Midwestern U.S. is shown on the monitor]

Greg: Here's a part of the world where we believe Double Trouble are hiding. If you know a lot about this area, you may wanna risk as much as you want. If not, you may wanna risk a little less. Take a look at the map, and think about it.

[The "risk" think cue is heard as the Gumshoes lock in their wagers]

[Afterwards, the cue ends]

Greg: Okay. Everyone's wagers are locked in. Now, this last clue could decide which two of you gets to move on to the next round.

[Elliott and Joey enter, singing and dancing (vaudeville-style) to the tune of You and I Are So Awfully Different from Family Guy]

Elliott and Joey: Double Trouble
is off to the slammer.
They're off to the slammer
to do all their time.

Joey: Wanna go first?

Elliott: Sure.
This state's named after the Lakota Sioux.
Joey: Uh-huh.
Check out Mount Rushmore. That's an important clue.

Elliott: The twins are double.
And they're lots of trouble.
They're in a big bubble.
They just hid in Pierre.
Joey: I hear you guys forgot that one in your song Capital.
Elliott: Never mind that.

Both
: To the 40th state to decide their fate,
you shall go for the alley.

Elliott: The twins saw a rodeo in a place called Deadwood.
Joey: Put an end to the crime of the party boys from the hood.
Elliott: You tell 'em, Joey.
Joey: Kick it!
Both: They're off to the slammer to do all their time.

[The rest of the singers join in and provide the background music]

Elliott and Joey: Double Trouble
is off to the slammer.
They're off to the slammer
to do all their time.

Elliott: Laura Ingalls Wilder is a writer, you see.
Joey: She's known for Little House on the Prairie.

Elliott: I bet 30,
they'll capture the dirty,...
and doubly sturdy...
criminals from the hood.
Joey: That's it?
Elliott: I just work with what they give me.

Both: You might think we're off-sync,
but we rule as a duo.
Elliott: Now, rescue the alley of Jack Kerouac.
Joey: And always remember that we've got your back.

Both: They're off to the slammer to do all their time!

[All singers exit]

Greg: Elliott Kerman and Joey Wheeler!

[Cheers and applause]

Greg: Love a little vaudeville on the show. Okay, Gumshoes. Final clue. Name the state. Is it South Dakota, Nebraska, or Kansas? Remember the clues that we heard: Named after Lakota Sioux, Mount Rushmore, Pierre, 40th State, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and rodeos in Deadwood.

[The Gumshoes lock in their answers]

Greg: Okay. Rolly, we'll start with you. You have 220 Crime Bucks. Before you show us your answer, how much did you wager?

Rolly: I wagered 30.

Greg: 30. If you're right, you'll go to 250 and a tie for the lead with Bud. What'd you say?

Rolly: South Dakota.

Greg: Yes, it is South Dakota! Nice job!

[Applause]

Greg: Nita, you have 240, and are behind by 10 Crime Bucks. How much did you risk?

Nita: 10.

Greg: Just 10. We'll have a 3-way tie if you're right. What'd you say?

Nita: I also said South Dakota.

Greg: And you've pulled into a 3-way tie!

[Applause]

Greg: Bud, you have 250. Maybe you can break the tie. How much did you risk?

Bud: 50.

Greg: 50. If you're right, you'll go to 300, advance to the next round, and we'll have a tiebreaker between Nita and Rolly. If not, you'll drop to 200, and Nita and Rolly will be your good friends. What'd you say?

Bud: Nebraska, unfortunately.

[BUZZER!]

Greg: Oh, I'm so sorry. Drops you to 200, and that means that Rolly and Nita, you're off to the next round!

[Applause]

Greg: Hey, Bud, tough break on the last clue. You almost made a good comeback today. But I guess things don't always work out. Chief, what do you have that can help him in his next case?

[Back to the Chief]

Chief: I've authorized the purchase of the contents for this ACME Crime Net Travel Kit. It all comes in this ACME Messenger Bag. Inside it, you'll find an atlas for world travelers, the ACME Crime Net cap with the logo in front, the official Carmen Croton Watch, a Carmen T-shirt, a subscription to National Geographic World Magazine, a new globe ball, and our brand-new ACME Sterling Silver Stealth Pen Recorder. It's the latest from ACME Labs for writing and recording messages.

[She pushes a button on her pen-recorder]

Chief's voice on recorder: Writing and recording messages.

Chief: You heard what she said. Congratulations!

[Applause]

Greg: Ahh! Okay, guys. Here we are. Take your positions over there.

[He and the Gumshoes take their positions]

Greg: Now, the Chief will be up here momentarily with some important instructions she'd like you to hear. So, listen very carefully. Chief?

[The Chief appears on the board]

Chief: Gumshoes, there are 15 places here in South Dakota where you might find Double Trouble, the Warrant, or the Jack Kerouac Alley. Let's look at a few of them.

Chief: Pierre, the capital of South Dakota. Founded in 1880 on the Missouri River opposite Fort Pierre, Pierre has been South Dakota's capital since it gained statehood in 1889, having been chosen for its location in the geographic center of the state.

Chief: This is Sioux Falls, the state's largest city. It's the 47th fastest growing city in the United States and the fastest growing metro area in the State of South Dakota, with a total increase of 22% since 2000.

Chief: Next, Black Hills, a small, isolated mountain range rising from the Great Plains of North America in South Dakota, and extending to Wyoming. The name "Black Hills" is a translation of the Lakota Pahá Sápa. The hills were so-called, on account of their dark appearance from a distance, as they were covered in trees.

Chief: And finally, who could forget the ever-popular Mount Rushmore? As everyone knows, this monument consists of sculpted heads of four presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Well, that's your briefing, Gumshoes. Now, send yourselves to South Dakota, arrive home with the alley, and trample Trouble! Greg!

[She signs off]

Greg: Thanks, Chief. Okay, Gumshoes. Here's the scoop. Here are the 15 possible locations where you may find Double Trouble, the alley, and a Warrant for the arrest. What you have to find first is the Loot. That's the evidence you need in order to get the Warrant. Once you find the Warrant, you can make the arrest. Connect all 3 in that order: Loot, Warrant, and Crook, in one turn, and you'll catch Double Trouble and get the chance to try and catch Carmen Sandiego. Catch Carmen Sandiego, and you'll win $10,000 and the trip to anywhere in North America. Now, one last thing. You can pick any location you wish, but if you happen to find the Loot, the Warrant, or the Crook at any time, you get a free look. You guys were tied at the end of the last round, so we tossed a coin, and Rolly won. Rolly, start us off.

Rolly: Wind Cave National Park.

Greg: Wind Cave National Park.

[Double Trouble]

Rockapella: Double Trouble (Trouble)!

Greg: There's the twins, right off the bat. But remember, you have to find the Loot first, then the Warrant, before you get the Crook. Free look, though.

Rolly: Bear Butte.

Greg: Bear Butte.

[Shoeprints]

Joey: Butt?

Tristan: Butte, Joey. Butte.

Greg: Thank you, Tristan. Nothing there, so we turn it back around. Nita, on to you.

Nita: Frawley Ranch.

Greg: Frawley Ranch.

[The Loot]

Duelapella: Abducted alley!

Greg: Wow! Nice job. You got the Loot. Free look.

Nita: Palisades Bridge.

Greg: Palisades Bridge.

[The Warrant]

Rockapella: The Warrant!

Greg: Oh, my God! I think you know where the twins are.

Nita: Wind Cave National Park.

Greg: Are Double Trouble still at Wind Cave National Park?!

[Double Trouble]

Rockapella and Duelapella: Double Trouble (Trouble)! YOU'VE WON!!

[Cheers and applause]

[The singers do their fanfare as the confetti falls on Nita]

Greg: Dang, you're fast, Nita! Come on over here!

[Nita walks up to him]

Greg: Nice job. You made this game look too easy. Now, what you have to do is put Double Trouble in jail, so pull the chain, and do it.

[Nita pulls the chain, and...]

Rockapella: Double Trouble (Trouble)'s in jail!

[Applause]

Greg: Stick around, Nita. We'll talk with you in just a little bit. First off, Rolly, you played a great game today. Awesome detective. You tracked Double Trouble all the way to South Dakota. We've got some great stuff for ya. Chief?

[Back to the Chief]

Chief: No Gumshoe who's tried their best is complete without reward for effort. And I've authorized a purchase for this lovely 4GB MP3 and video player. It even includes a 2.8-inch touch screen. Plus, we've added music from around the world, as well as 10 songs of your choice by Rockapella. The perfect gift for the Gumshoe on the go. Congratulations! I salute you!

[Applause]

Greg: Nita, that 2nd round went by so quickly, there's still lots of time left in the show. I don't know what we're gonna do. But for now, take this portfolio.

[He hands Nita a portfolio]

Greg: Inside is a sheet of paper and a marker. What you have to do is write down where you'd like to go if you catch Carmen Sandiego and get the trip and $10,000.

[The "trip think" cue starts as Nita writes down her trip location in her portfolio]

[Afterwards, the cue ends]

Greg: I like that choice. I wanna find out later if you win it. Now, you had a great day today. You got Double Trouble, you got the stolen alley back, you're the first Sleuth of 2012.

[The phone rings]

Greg: Hold on a sec. I gotta get the phone. It's not where it usually is today.

[He looks around until he finds a shoe phone under one of the station-audience bleachers]

Greg: Ah. Here it is. [to an audience member] Sorry. [picks up] Hello? Yep. I'll put her on.

[He hands the phone to Nita]

Nita: Hello?

Double Trouble: We'll party a lot heartier in the slammer if we know Carmen's on her way. Look for her in the United States.

[They hang up]

Greg: United States?

Nita: Yeah.

Greg: Then that's where you and I are going. Chief?

[Back to the Chief]

Chief: Here's a list of places Carmen may have traveled:

Madison, Wisconsin.
Jamestown, North Dakota.
Providence, Rhode Island.
Montpelier, Vermont.
Selden, New York.
Lewisville, Texas.
Sanford, North Carolina.
La Verne, California.
Collerville, Tennessee.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Indianapolis, Indiana.
Detroit, Michigan.
Fairfax, Virginia.

Greg! Let's go to the Map!

Scott: I feel GOOD!

[Applause]

[The singers do the Map intro; Greg and Nita enter the Map of the U.S.A.]

Greg: Okay, Nita. This is what this show's all about: Catching Carmen Sandiego. What you have to do here is track her by identifying 10 states in 60 seconds, each with a marker. If you're right, you'll hear this sound.

[SIREN!]

Greg: But if you're wrong, you'll hear this sound.

[BUZZER!]

Greg: If you're wrong 2 times, leave the marker where it is, come back, and we'll go on. But if you're right 10 times within 60 seconds, you will win that trip and the 10 grand. You ready for this?

Nita: Yeah!

Greg: Audience, you ready?!

Audience: YEAH!

Greg: Nita, get your first marker.

[Nita grabs her first marker]

Greg: Let's get 60 seconds up on the clock.

[The timer is set at 60 seconds]

Greg: Good luck to you, Nita. Here we go. On your mark, get set, GO!

[The timer and music start]

Greg: Carmen went to Sanford, North Carolina! North Carolina! Come on, Nita!

Greg: No! C'mon back! Montpelier, Vermont! Vermont!

[Nita quickly heads for Vermont...]

[BUZZER!!] (time's up!)

Greg: Oh! Tough luck. 8 in 60 seconds. Give her a big round of applause. She's got $4,000!

[Applause]

Greg: Sorry about that, Nita. But you got 8, so we're gonna give you $500 for each one. Total: $4,000. And the Chief has this gift for ya. Chief?

[Back to the Chief]

Chief: Tough break! I just hate it when Carmen escapes! But no one could've done more than you did to catch her, Nita. And that deserves a fine reward: This 8GB iPod Nano, and this $100 iTunes gift card. And more importantly, your status has been upgraded from Gumshoe to Sleuth! Congratulations!

[Applause]

[Back to the Map]

Greg: Congratulations. Also, we have a little bonus. You only get it if you get at least 5 on your first time on the Map, and you got 8, so you get this nice digital camera.

[He hands Nita a digital camera]

Greg: And that's not all. You get the Official Carmen Sandiego Sleuth Jacket!

[Applause]

Greg: So far, you have a grand total of an even $5,000 in cash and prizes. And you'll be back tomorrow for your trip and our jackpot of $18,000. Now, there's one more thing I want you to do. You know what it is?!

All: DO IT, ROCKAPELLA!!!

[Rockapella and Duelapella perform the theme song during the end credits]

Sean: Well, she sneaks around the world
from Kiev to Carolina.
She's a sticky-fingered filcher
from Berlin down to Belize.
Yugi: She'll take you for a ride
on a slow boat to China.

[After the credits, the audience jams to the music]

[Back to the Chief]

Chief: This is S. Epatha Merkerson speaking for Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?. See ya next time!

[Post-show segment; audience game]

Chief: Joy Wright, my office! Immediately!

[Said audience member stands up and runs up to Greg]

Greg: You Joy?

Joy: Yeah.

Greg: Come this way. We're off to the Chief's office.

[He and Joy enter the Chief's office]

Chief: Joy, welcome. Now, Greg and I are always on the lookout for new ACME agents, and I think you've got potential. Also, remember, this is another way you can become a real Gumshoe on this show. All you have to do is correctly answer a question that Greg is about to ask you. If not, don't worry. There's always the tryouts outside of the show. Greg, you got the question ready?

Greg: Yes, Chief. Ready, Joy?

Joy: Yes, captain.

Greg: Here's your question: The Okhotnykovo Solar Park is the world's 4th largest solar plant and the largest solar plant in central and eastern Europe. It's located in which of the following European countries? Latvia, Ukraine, or Belarus?

Joy: Tough question. Belarus?

[BUZZER!]

Greg: Sorry, Joy. It was Ukraine. Tough break. But you still have potential.

Chief: You said it, Greg. [hands Joy an atlas] Joy, here's your atlas as our gift to you. Take it and be proud.

Joy: Thank you.

[She exits the office]

Greg: We still have time for a few more, Chief.

Chief: Right. [reads next name] Our next trainee is... Martin Madigan! My office!

[Greg exits the office, walks up to said audience member, and leads him back to the office]

Greg: Come on, Martin. Duty calls.

[He and Martin enter the office]

Chief: There you are, Martin. Okay, Greg. Give him the question.

Greg: Yes, ma'am. Martin, here's your question. The Green Mile, based on the novel written by Stephen King, is a drama film that took place in which of the following U.S. states? Louisiana, Alabama, or Mississippi?

Martin: Louisiana.

[Bells sound out]

[Applause]

Greg: You got it, Martin! The Green Mile took place in the state of Louisiana.

[The Chief hands Martin a Carmen t-shirt]

Chief: Here's your Carmen t-shirt. Wear it with pride! And we hope to see you again soon.

Martin: Thank you.

[He exits the office]

Greg: I think we have time for one more.

Chief: [reads next name] Bonnie Clarke, my office!

[Greg exits the office, and leads said audience member back]

Greg: Come on, Bonnie. The Chief needs us.

[He and Bonnie enter the Chief's office]

Chief: Bonnie, I wish you luck. Greg, the question.

Greg: Listen carefully, Bonnie. Ricky Ricardo, the husband in I Love Lucy, was born in which Caribbean island country? Grenada, Puerto Rico, or Cuba?

Bonnie: Cuba.

[Bells sound out]

[Applause]

Greg: Absolutely right, Bonnie! I knew you had the potential.

[The Chief hands Bonnie a t-shirt]

Chief: Here's your t-shirt. And we hope to see you again soon. Maybe you could get Carmen.

Bonnie: Thanks.

[She exits the office]

Chief: And remember, Gumshoes, we're always on the lookout for new agents.

Greg: Could you be one?!

[The end]
